The Effects of Service Life on Military-Connected High School Students

Military-connected high school adolescents navigate some of the most demanding educational transitions, including relocations, parental deployments, and reintegration. Yet they remain among the most underexamined populations in educational research. This qualitative narrative inquiry explores how parents, educators, and administrators experience and understand the academic and socio-emotional disruptions military-connected adolescents face across time, relationships, and environments. The findings reveal that academic disruption is driven more by structural barriers than student ability, that emotional strain peaks during transitional periods, and that resilience often develops alongside fatigue. The study calls on educational leaders to strengthen transition policies, relational supports, and school practices that meet these students where they are.
