The Report Impacting Mission Readiness

THE BRIEF

Manual reporting is one of the most persistent drains on operational capacity. Yet, it often goes unaddressed because the cost is invisible. This interactive scenario was created as part of a leadership curriculum to make that cost visible. The audience was organizational leadership, and the learning objective was to help leaders understand why manual reporting slows mission execution, drains team capacity, and creates hidden operational risks, and how data-driven decision-making automation restores accuracy, readiness, and time.

THE PROCESS

This experience was built as a branching scenario in PowerApps, a deliberate design choice that put the leader in the decision-making seat rather than passively presenting information. The scenario was structured around a realistic operational challenge: a team overwhelmed by manual reporting with constrained manpower and high operational tempo. Each decision point was designed with three options, consequence screens showing the operational impact of each choice, and a final reflection that prompted the leader to connect the scenario to their own teams. The branching logic ensured that poor decisions led to natural consequences rather than generic wrong-answer feedback, reinforcing the idea that leadership choices have real downstream effects.

THE OUTCOME

Leaders who completed this scenario walked away with a clear understanding of the difference between narrative-based and data-driven leadership, and a concrete framework for identifying and addressing high-driction reporting burdens with their own teams. The scenario format created an emotional connection to the material that a traditional module could not. Leaders experienced the consequences of their decisions rather than reading about them, making the learning more likely to transfer to real behavior.

SKILLS DEMONSTRATED

This project demonstrates advanced instructional design, specifically the ability to design branching scenario logic that creates meaningful, consequence-driven learning rather than binary right-or-wrong feedback. Building this experience in PowerApps required both instructional design thinking and technical execution, reflecting a commitment to using the tools available within the organization’s existing ecosystem. The scenario also demonstrates an understanding of how to design for transfer by connecting learning to a real operational context so that behavior change is not just possible but probable.
